How We Learn Math While Freeschoolin'

Posted on March 8, 2016 at 8:15 AM

I grew up terrified of it but through the Freeschoolin'/Unschooling life, we have learned to LOVE it.
And it's everywhere!

Easel and Fridge at the ready for impromtu Math conversations and play.

Recently, Hope (5) was shopping for some toys and revealed to us she has taught herself to read price tags!  She was able to use this knowledge to make her choices more easily and she was extremely proud of this empowerment.

Hope and her 'new' purchase from a thrift store.

We also have been cake baking with a new recipe we found and Hope has been very eager to help; her love of chocolate cake invokes her love of measurements, amounts and other types of baking Math.

We even have a few abacus' in the house; one we keep in the bathroom and I often hear Hope counting away with it while she does her business.

Here's a quick list of ways we learn Math by choice via Freeschoolin':

  • Minecraft
  • Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiments
  • Water Experimentation
  • Puzzles
  • Cooking and Baking
  • Home Organization
  • Retail Experiences
  • Household Budgeting
  • Resource Management
  • Gardening
  • Cleaning
  • Workbooks
  • Labour Efficiency
  • Art Projects
  • Counting
  • Lego/Block Building
  • Reading ( Yes! Reading contains pattern recognition; Math! )
  • Money Play
  • Kitchen Play
  • Card Games
  • Chess
  • Magnet Tangrams

There's more of course; feel free to share in the comments!

Freeschoolin'/Unschooling has changed our lives and how we learn as a family. We love Mathematics and all it brings to our lives.
#NeverNotLearning    #MathIsEverywhere

Hope used her magnets to make a patterned chain.

Much Love,
